Our take

Cakewalk by BandLab is a 25-year-old professional DAW that BandLab gave away for free, then rebranded as Sonar in 2025. It's overkill for podcast editing but matches Pro Tools, Logic, and Studio One feature-for-feature for music production. Wrong tool if you just want to clip an interview; right tool for serious Windows-based audio work.

In depth

Cakewalk by BandLab is a professional-grade DAW completely free on Windows, originally developed in the 1990s and now maintained by BandLab Technologies. It went through a brief discontinuation but came back in 2025 under its original name, Sonar, with a refreshed visual identity, high-DPI support, and continued active development.

The feature set is full DAW territory: unlimited audio and MIDI tracks, full VST plugin compatibility, a 64-bit audio engine, advanced mixing console with surround support, low-latency recording, MIDI sequencing and notation, and a deep library of stock instruments and effects. For comparison, this is the same general capability tier as Logic Pro ($200), Studio One Professional ($400), or Pro Tools Studio ($30/mo) — except it's free indefinitely.

The catch is access: Windows-only, period. No Mac, no Linux, no web. All you need is a free BandLab account, which doubles as the login for BandLab's cloud-based music creation platform.

For podcasters, Cakewalk is overkill — you're not going to use the orchestral notation tools or 64-track mixing automation. Audacity (also free) or Reaper ($60 personal) are better matched for typical podcast workflows.

Where Cakewalk really shines is musicians, audio engineers, beat-makers, and serious hobbyists on Windows who want pro DAW features without licensing cost. The learning curve is real — this is software that assumes you know what a send does and how to route MIDI — but the rewards are substantial if you stick with it.
