Our take

Source-Connect is the boring, expensive standard every Hollywood ADR and audiobook studio actually uses — uncompressed quality, Auto-Restore for dropouts, deep Pro Tools integration. The audience is pros doing voice work for film, TV, and games, and the pricing reflects that. If you're recording an indie chat podcast, this is wildly the wrong tool.

In depth

Source-Connect is the industry-standard tool for remote voice tracking in professional audio post-production. It's what the studio recording the voiceover for your favorite Pixar trailer or AAA game is using to capture an actor sitting in their home booth in another city.

The technical proposition is uncompromising: low-latency, uncompressed or high-bitrate audio streamed bidirectionally between studios, with Auto-Restore and Auto-Replace features that detect dropouts and patch them with full-quality audio pulled from the local recording, so master takes are always clean even when the network isn't. Source-Connect integrates directly with Pro Tools and other major DAWs through the Source-Nexus suite, giving engineers monitoring, mixing, and supervision capabilities on a remote session as if everyone were in the same room.

Sessions support up to 6 simultaneous participants. The cost is significant: $35/mo Standard for talent, $105/mo Pro for studios, a $75 setup fee, and optional lifetime licenses up to $2,450 for facilities that never want to think about subscriptions again.

Configuration involves accounts, contact lists, codec settings, and a learning curve the typical podcaster has no reason to climb. Best for voiceover artists, dialog editors, audiobook producers, anyone doing professional ADR or commercial voice work where takes must be uncompressed and recoverable. Completely overkill for a two-person interview show — use Riverside, Cleanfeed, or even Zoom for that.
