Make clips from your terminal

Connect Slice to Claude Code or Codex, point it at a video on your computer, and get captioned vertical clips back, cut the way a video editor would cut them. Your first video and first 2 clips are free, no card.

  1. Add Slice as a connector

In the Claude app open Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector. Name it Slice and paste this address:

    https://mcp.tryslicemedia.com/mcp

Do this once. The connector also works in Claude Code on the same Claude account.

  2. Open the Code tab

Start a new Code session and choose the folder that holds your video.

  3. Ask for clips

    Make clips from ~/Movies/episode-12.mp4

The first time, Claude asks you to sign in to Slice in your browser. Use the email on your Slice account.

What happens next

  • Your agent asks one question first: find the best clips in the video, or edit the whole video as one piece.
  • The first time, your agent checks for a free tool called ffmpeg and, if it is missing, asks to install it for you. One yes and it is done.
  • Your agent takes the sound out of the video on your computer and uploads only that, so a long episode goes up in seconds.
  • A few minutes later Slice sends back a numbered list of the best moments: a title, the times, the length and the opening line of each.
  • It can cut a quick preview of each clip into a slice-previews folder next to you, so you can watch before you choose.
  • Say which ones you want, like make 1 and 3, and the shape: 9:16 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok, 4:5 or 1:1 for feeds, or 16:9 for YouTube. Slice frames each on the speaker, adds captions and puts the finished clips in your Slice account.

Things to try

Find clips about moneySearches the episode again for a topic.
Make it squareAsk for 9:16, 4:5, 1:1 or 16:9.
Make the captions biggerRestyles a clip you already made.
Add visuals to clip 1Your agent can design graphics for the clip.

If something goes wrong

It asked to install ffmpeg

ffmpeg is a free tool that lets your computer send only the sound of your video, so uploads take seconds. Say yes and your agent installs it for you, once. Slice needs it, so nothing uploads until it is installed.

Sign-in did not open, or it failed

In Claude Code type /mcp, pick slice and choose to sign in again. In Codex run codex mcp login slice again. Use the same email as your Slice account.

It cannot find my video

Give the full path to the file, or drag the file into the terminal window to paste its path. In the Claude app, open the folder that holds the video when you start the session.

Slice is not in the list of tools

Check the address is exactly the one on this page. In the Claude app, make sure the Slice connector is switched on. Then start a new session.

Can I pick the clips on the website instead?

Yes. Every episode is also in your Slice account, so you can open it at tryslicemedia.com and pick clips there.

What it costs

The same as the website: your first video and first 2 clips are free, then clips one at a time or the plan. Prices are on the pricing page. Using Slice from ChatGPT or the Claude chat instead? See Slice for AI agents.
