Can Claude edit video? How to make clips with Claude
· by the Slice team, who make the plugin
The short answer
No, not on its own: Claude can talk about a video and work with its transcript, but it can’t cut, reframe or render video. Add Slice as a custom connector and it can. Ask Claude to make clips with Slice, upload the video through the link it gives you (up to 3 hours), and Slice finds the best moments. Pick them by number and you get vertical clips with captions and a hook title, as download links in the chat. Clips need a Slice plan ($14.99 a month, 3 days free); transcription is free.
New to the plugin? Set up Slice in ChatGPT or Claude first. It takes a couple of minutes.
What can Claude do with video, and what can’t it?
| Job | Claude on its own | Claude with Slice connected |
|---|---|---|
| Suggest moments from a transcript you paste in | Yes | Yes, and Slice finds them from the video itself |
| Cut clips out of a long video | No | Yes |
| Reframe to vertical and burn in captions | No | Yes, in any of 29 caption styles |
| Hand back a captioned clip to post | No | Yes, a 1080×1920 MP4 per clip |
| Write the post text | Yes | Yes, with the clips’ titles already in the chat |
How do you make clips with Claude?
Untested in Claude so far: these steps follow the same Slice tools we ran end to end in ChatGPT on 1 October 2026, but we haven’t yet done the full run in Claude, so there are no Claude screenshots or timings here.
- Add Slice as a custom connector
In Claude’s settings, add a custom connector with the address https://mcp.tryslicemedia.com/mcp. Sign in with your Slice account when Claude asks.
Each screen is in the setup guide.
- Ask Claude to start an episode with Slice
In a new chat, ask for clips in plain words. Claude can’t pass a file you attach in the chat to a connector, so Slice answers with an upload link instead.
TypeUse Slice to make short clips from my podcast episode - Upload the video through the link
Open the link and drop in the video: MP4, MOV or WebM, up to 3 hours and 2GB. The upload picks up where it left off if your connection drops. The link works for 2 hours.
- Ask Claude for the moments
Slice transcribes the video and looks for clips on its own once the upload finishes. Ask Claude to check; when it is done you get a numbered list with titles, lengths and opening lines.
Is it ready? Show me the clips Slice found - Pick the clips by number
Reply with the numbers you want. Slice cuts each one to vertical, adds a hook title and word-by-word captions, and Claude gives you a download link for each.
Make 2 and 4
What can you ask for once the clips are made?
| You type | What happens |
|---|---|
Make the captions bigger on clip 2 | Saves the change and renders it again. |
Move the captions up | Moves them higher, clear of an app’s buttons. |
Turn the hook title off | Removes the title card at the start. |
Show me the caption styles | Lists all 29 with a preview picture of each. |
What does clip 4 say at 0:12? | Reads back the captions at that point, so you can check a word. |
How is it different from doing this in ChatGPT?
The tools are the same and so are the clips. The one difference is how the video gets to Slice. In ChatGPT you attach the file in the chat and Slice picks it up. In Claude you open the upload link Slice gives you. That is an extra step, but it is also the route for big files, and the same link is available in ChatGPT if an attachment is too large. The ChatGPT version, with screenshots, is in how to make podcast clips with ChatGPT.
What if it doesn’t work?
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Claude doesn’t use Slice | Check the connector is turned on for this chat, and name it in your message: “use Slice to…”. |
| Claude asks you to sign in | Sign in with your Slice account. Transcription works without it; clips don’t. |
| “This needs a Slice plan” | Start the 3-day trial on the Slice website, then ask again. |
| The upload link has expired | Links last 2 hours. Ask Claude for a new one. |
| Still working after a while | Ask “Is it ready?”. Slice reports where it has got to. |
Questions
Can Claude edit video?
Not by itself. Claude can read and write about a video’s content, for example from a transcript, but it has no way to cut, reframe or render video files. A connector can add that: with Slice connected, Claude can ask Slice to find the moments and make captioned vertical clips.
Why does Claude give me an upload link instead of using my attachment?
Claude doesn’t hand files attached in a chat to connectors. So Slice gives you a link to upload the video straight to Slice, which also lets it take long files: up to 3 hours and 2GB.
Can I give Claude a YouTube link?
Not for clips in the chat; the connector works from an uploaded file. The Slice website can import YouTube links if your episode is there.
Can Claude transcribe audio with Slice?
Yes, free and with no sign-in: give Claude a direct link to the audio or video file and ask for a transcript. Up to 90 minutes a file and 5 files a day.
Have you tested this in Claude?
The connector and its tools are the same ones we tested end to end in ChatGPT on 1 October 2026. We have not yet run the full clip-making flow in Claude, so this page has no Claude screenshots or timings. We will add them once we have.
What does it cost?
Clips need a Slice plan: $14.99 a month or $149 a year, with a 3-day free trial. Transcription is free.
