Questions

What aspect ratio works on all platforms?
9:16 vertical (1080×1920) works on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels, Snapchat, and X. It's the universal short-form format. For long-form, 16:9 (1920×1080) is standard across YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X.
What codec should I use?
H.264 is universally supported and recommended. It offers the best compatibility across all platforms. H.265 (HEVC) provides better compression but isn't supported everywhere. For YouTube specifically, AV1 offers excellent quality at lower bitrates if your encoder supports it.
What bitrate should I export at?
For 1080p: 8-12 Mbps for standard content, 12-20 Mbps for fast motion. For 4K: 35-45 Mbps. Social platforms will re-encode your video, so uploading at higher quality gives better results after compression.
Why do my videos look blurry after upload?
Platforms compress videos heavily. Upload at the highest quality possible (higher bitrate than the minimum). Wait 24-48 hours for HD processing to complete. Avoid re-uploading the same video multiple times as each re-encode degrades quality.
What are safe zones?
Safe zones are the areas of your video that won't be covered by platform UI (buttons, captions, profile info). Measured on a 1080×1920 frame, TikTok's is 745×1374px starting 97px from the left and 204px from the top and Instagram Reels' is 771×1315px starting 97px from the left and 217px from the top. Every platform's, with sources, is in our social video specs reference.
