The Podcast Host

The Podcast Host has been publishing tutorials, gear reviews, and how-to guides since 2011, making it one of the oldest dedicated podcasting education sites still actively running. Founded by Colin Gray, who also created the Alitu podcast editing app.

The free side of the site is a deep archive of step-by-step articles — how to start a show, how to record, how to interview, how to grow — refreshed with 2026-era content on video podcasting, AI tools, indie grants and funding opportunities, and podcast awards. The Podcast Host Academy is the paid membership layer, with structured courses, downloadable templates, and a member community.

The tone is practical and friendly, the kind of writing that assumes you've never opened audio software before. Drawbacks: a lot of articles funnel toward Alitu, and the breadth of topics can mean shallower coverage than you'd get from a specialist source.

It's also focused on the independent podcaster experience — not on industry strategy, ad sales, or running a network. Good first stop for someone starting out. Less useful if you're already running multiple shows or selling sponsorships.

Colin Gray and the team also produce a podcast about podcasting (Podcraft) and a long-running newsletter, which together with the site form an ecosystem you can plug into at whatever depth you want. The Academy adds courses on more advanced topics like interviewing technique, episode structure, and growing past 1,000 listeners — useful when you've exhausted the free articles and want structured progression instead of grazing.
