Shorts by Slice

From the team behind these free tools

Your kit says how big the audience is. Clips are how it gets bigger.

Put the episode in whole. Shorts reads all of it, picks the moments worth posting, and sends them back vertical with the captions burned in, ready for the feed the sponsor is asking about.

Longest episode each one will take

Shaded is 45 to 90 minutes, the length of a normal episode.

Three of those stop before a normal episode is halfway in. The usual answer is to cut the episode up first and feed it through in pieces, which is the job you were trying to hand over.

Questions

What is a podcast media kit?
One page you send to a potential sponsor or to a guest you want on the show. It says what the show is, who makes it, how often it comes out, how big the audience is and what it costs to advertise on it. Sponsors ask for one by name, and a guest booker will read it before deciding whether to say yes.
What should a podcast media kit include?
Artwork and show name so it is recognisable at a glance, the host, the category, how often you publish, how many episodes you have made, a short description, downloads per episode, who your listeners are, your rates, and a way to get in touch. Listener quotes and your rating are the parts most kits skip and the parts a sponsor remembers.
Where do the numbers come from?
Episode count, publishing schedule, typical episode length and the description are read from your RSS feed. Artwork, category, your star rating and the written reviews come from Apple Podcasts and from nowhere else. Downloads, audience, your figures on other platforms and your rates are not published anywhere, so you type those in yourself and they stay in your browser.
Why does the kit say Apple Podcasts only next to the rating?
Because that is what the number is. Apple is the only platform that publishes ratings and written reviews in a form anyone can read, so a show can have two hundred thousand Spotify listeners and eleven Apple ratings. Printed without a label, a sponsor reads that rating as the whole picture. It is marked on the page so nobody has to guess, and so the figure you do put next to it carries more weight.
Can I add my Spotify and YouTube numbers?
Yes, by typing them in. Neither publishes a per-show figure anyone else can read, so there is no way to pull them. Add a row per platform and the kit prints the breakdown with a combined total under it. The total says on the page that it was added up from figures you supplied, because a sponsor who checks one of them needs to already know that.
Can I change what was pulled from my feed?
All of it. Click any line on the document and type. Your feed description was written for listeners and a sponsor is not a listener, so it is usually the first thing worth rewriting. The original is kept either way, and a changed field offers to put it back.
Are the listener quotes real?
Yes. Most of them are written reviews from Apple Podcasts, with the reviewer name and the country they were written in printed next to each one, so anyone reading your kit can go and check. You can also write in up to two of your own, and those are marked on the page as supplied by you rather than read from Apple. Nothing on the page is written by a machine.
Can I add a review that is not on Apple Podcasts?
Up to two, and the kit is clear about which they are. Plenty of the nicest things a listener says arrive by email or sit on Spotify, where nobody outside can read them. A quote you type prints with the words "supplied by the host" beside it, and once one is on the page the heading over that section stops saying "on Apple Podcasts", because it would no longer be true of everything under it. Two is the limit on purpose: a wall of quotes a sponsor cannot check is worth less than two they can.
Can I edit a review before it goes on the kit?
Yes, and the kit says what you did. Cutting a long review down to the sentence that fits is normal and is marked "shortened". If you add words the reviewer did not write, it is marked "edited by the host" instead, so their name is never under a sentence they did not say. What Apple published is kept either way and one click puts it back.
Why does it say there are no reviews for my show?
Reviews live per country, and most countries hold none even for a large show. Try adding more storefronts. If your listeners are mostly in one place, that is usually the only shop with anything in it. The page tells you which countries it looked in and which ones answered, so you can tell an empty shop from a question we could not get an answer to.
Can I use my own colours?
Yes. The accent, the masthead, the masthead text, the paper and the body text each take any colour you like, from a picker or a hex code. If a choice would print as unreadable, the kit darkens or lightens that one colour until it can be read and tells you what it changed it to, on screen and in the file.
Do I need an account, and is anything uploaded?
No account, no email address and no limit on how many you make. Your feed address is read to build the kit. The figures you type, your rates and your contact details are never sent anywhere: the PDF is built by your own browser on your own machine.
How often should I update it?
Whenever you send it. That is the point of this page over a template you edit by hand. Come back, paste the same feed address, and the episode count, the schedule, the latest episodes and the reviews are read again from scratch.
Can I use it for pitching myself as a guest?
Yes, and it is one of the most common uses. Leave the rates empty, and use the working together box to say what you want to talk about and what you would bring to their audience.
What belongs on a podcast media kit

Read from your feed: Episode count, schedule, typical length, description, recent episodes. Filled in for you, and every line of it yours to rewrite.

Read from Apple: Artwork, category, star rating, written listener reviews. Apple only, and labelled that way on the page. It is the part a sponsor can go and verify.

Only you have: Downloads, Spotify and YouTube figures, who listens, rates, contact. Not published anywhere. Typed in, marked as yours, and never sent to us.

A sponsor reads a kit in about fifteen seconds, with forty more in the inbox behind it. That is why this is one page and why the numbers sit in a column down the side, which is where they look for them.
