Screen Print Effect

The weave of the mesh the ink was pushed through, left behind in the print.

Screen printing pushes ink through a stretched mesh. The mesh has a weave, and at the edges of a flood the weave shows — a woven texture sitting inside the ink rather than on top of the image.

That is why this look uses a woven pattern rather than a dot: it is not imitating a halftone screen, it is imitating the fabric. Multiplied, so the ink darkens and the paper carries the light.

What this look is made of: Woven at 6px spacing with a 4px thread, in near-black, multiplied at 38%. Every one of those is a control below, so this is a starting point rather than a filter.

Questions

What is the difference between this and the newsprint look?
Newsprint is a dot screen — the image is broken into dots of varying size. This is a weave, which is the texture of the mesh itself, so it reads as ink pressed through fabric rather than as a printed photograph.
Can I get the misregistration look?
Not in one pass. Export the image, change the texture colour, nudge the export in any editor by a few pixels and lay it over — two slightly offset layers is what gives a screen print its handmade edge.
Does it work on flat colour as well as photos?
Better, in fact. A flat fill with a woven texture multiplied into it is exactly what a screen printed block of colour looks like; a photograph has its own detail competing with the weave.
