Guide for podcasters
How long should a podcast clip be?
Every app lets you post far longer than anyone will watch. Here is each platform’s real limit from its own pages, what we would post on each, what podcasters report from their own accounts, and how Slice decides how long a clip should be.
The short answer
Usually 30 to 90 seconds, and never longer than the moment. Every platform allows more than that, so the moment decides, not the app: a punchline lands in 30 to 45 seconds, a story with a turn needs a minute or two. Two limits do bite: X stops free accounts at 2 minutes 20 seconds, and YouTube blocks Shorts over a minute that carry a Content ID claim. Slice keeps every clip it finds between 30 seconds and two and a half minutes.
Shorts by Slice turns a long podcast or stream into captioned vertical clips. $14.99 a month. Your first 3 clips are free, no card. Then a 3-day free trial for the rest.

The second column is each platform’s own limit, read on 2 October 2026 for our Social Video Specs 2026, with a link to the page it came from. The third is what we would post.
| Platform | The limit | What to post | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 10 min via API; app limit not published (TikTok developer docs: media transfer) | 30 to 90 seconds | Far inside the limit. The first two seconds matter more than the total, so start on the line that makes someone stay. |
| Instagram Reels | 20 min in the app (Instagram Help: Reels length) | 30 to 90 seconds | Instagram itself says Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences, which are the people a clip is for. |
| YouTube Shorts | 3 min (YouTube Help: Shorts up to 3 minutes) | 30 to 60 seconds with any licensed music; up to 2:30 without | Shorts over a minute with an active Content ID claim are blocked worldwide, so a clip with a song in it stays under 60 seconds. |
| Facebook Reels (all video) | No limit (Meta Business Help: Facebook Reels) | 30 to 90 seconds | No limit, so the same file as your Reel works. |
| 15 min (LinkedIn Help: video specs) | 30 seconds to 2:30 | A full answer with its reasoning fits, and LinkedIn takes up to 15 minutes. | |
| X (Twitter) Video post | 2:20 free, 4 h Premium (X Help: longer videos) | Under 2:20 on a free account | Free accounts stop at 140 seconds, so trim the longest clips by a sentence or two. |
| Instagram Stories | 60 s per clip (Instagram blog: how to use Stories) | Up to 60 seconds per story | Longer videos are split into several story clips. |
| Snapchat Spotlight | 5–60 s on the web; up to 5 min in the app (Snapchat Support: post to Spotlight) | Under 60 seconds from the web | Web uploads take 5 to 60 seconds; the app takes longer. |
One file can serve most of them: a vertical clip of 30 to 90 seconds fits TikTok, Reels, Shorts, Facebook and LinkedIn as it is. Only X, Stories and Spotlight ask you to cut a long clip down.
Let the moment set the length
The useful question is not how long a platform allows but how long this moment takes to land. Roughly:
| The moment | Usually runs | Cut it here |
|---|---|---|
| A punchline or one sharp line | 30 to 45 seconds | Start one breath before the line, end on the laugh. |
| A story with a turn | 60 to 120 seconds | Start where the story starts, not on the question that led to it. |
| An opinion with its reason | 45 to 90 seconds | Keep the claim and the reason; drop the second example. |
| An answer to a big question | 90 to 150 seconds | Put the question on screen as text, so the clip can open on the answer. |
The test for where to start is the one podcasters keep coming back to:
“try one hard filter: if the moment needs more than 10 seconds of setup to make sense, reject it.”
And the first two seconds count for more than the last thirty. Headliner’s own account, answering in r/podcasting:
“I would argue the quality of the clip and initial 1-2 seconds of audio are going to be the most critical part of making an engaging clip.”
In words: the transcript of the 82-minute episode below runs at about 176 words a minute, so a 30-second clip is about 90 words, a minute about 180 and two and a half minutes about 440. People talk at very different speeds, which is why Slice measures each episode rather than assuming.
What podcasters report
From r/podcasting, in their own words. Most land on about a minute; the ones who go longer have a reason.
“When I create 30-60 second reels from our hour show, they get around 600-1,500 views on Instagram.”
“I had a episode sitting at like 40 listens for two months, made one clip under 60 seconds and it got 8k views on tiktok.”
“just chop out 2-3 weird/funny 60-second clips per episode and dump them on tiktok and instagram reels.”
“try to use Headliner to post one minute snippets. I know what you mean it can be tough compared to people who shoot video.”
“I finally realized that instead of 30 second clips I should be doing 90 second game reviews.”
“Experiment with 7s, 10s, 15s, 30s, 61s, 90s, even 5 min posts. Different lengths will tell you different things about what actually hooks people.”
Longer clips have a place too, as ordinary videos on your YouTube channel rather than as Shorts:
“This keeps your main channel clear to focus strictly on those 5 to 10-minute discovery clips without long, audio-only files dragging down your average view duration.”
Quoted word for word and checked against the Arctic Shift archive of Reddit on 8 October 2026. None of them is about Slice.
How many clips are in one episode?
Fewer than people hope. Two counts from the people who make them:
“If usable means it stands alone with a hook and a payoff for someone who has never heard the show, most 60 minute episodes have three to six, not twenty.”
“From an 70-90 minute episode I pull 6-9 clips to use as YouTube Shorts. Our goal is to post a clip a day.”
How Slice decides how long a clip is
- 30 seconds to two and a half minutes, for every clip it finds. Podcast, stream, sermon or talk, the same window.
- By whole sentences. If the moment it picks is shorter than 30 seconds, Slice adds the sentences around it where it can, and drops the moment where it cannot; if it runs past 2:30, it cuts back a sentence at a time. A clip never starts or ends mid-word.
- Talks, sermons and streams aim for 45 to 90 seconds, and go longer only when the moment needs it. For those, the finder is told how many words 45, 90 and 150 seconds are at this speaker’s own pace before it chooses.
- Your own picks can be longer or shorter. Mark any stretch of the transcript and it becomes a clip from 3 seconds to 10 minutes; every clip can be trimmed.
On a real episode, LinuxGameCast Weekly 430 (1:21:55, LinuxGameCast LLP, CC BY-SA 4.0), Slice listed 4 moments, 0:34, 0:51, 1:07, 1:11 long. All four fit TikTok, Reels, Shorts, Facebook, LinkedIn and X as they are; the two over a minute would need trimming for Stories, for Spotlight from the web, or for a Short with licensed music. The whole run, step by step, is in how to pick the best moments from a podcast.

Questions
How long should a podcast clip be?
Usually 30 to 90 seconds, and never longer than the moment. Every platform allows more than that, so the moment decides, not the app: a punchline lands in 30 to 45 seconds, a story with a turn needs a minute or two. Two limits do bite: X stops free accounts at 2 minutes 20 seconds, and YouTube blocks Shorts over a minute that carry a Content ID claim. Slice keeps every clip it finds between 30 seconds and two and a half minutes.
What is the best length for a podcast clip on TikTok?
Between 30 and 90 seconds for most moments. TikTok takes much longer videos, so the limit is not the problem; whether people stay past the first two seconds is. Start on the strongest line and end on the payoff.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to 3 minutes, recorded or uploaded, with no minimum, per YouTube Help. Shorts longer than 1 minute with an active Content ID claim are blocked worldwide, so keep clips with licensed music under a minute.
How long can an Instagram Reel be?
Up to 20 minutes, recorded and edited in the app, per Instagram Help. Instagram also says Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences, so a clip meant to find new listeners stays well under that.
How many clips should I make from one episode?
As many moments as stand on their own, which is fewer than people expect. One podcaster in r/podcasting puts it at three to six in a 60-minute episode; another pulls six to nine from 70 to 90 minutes and posts one a day.
How long are the clips Slice makes?
Between 30 seconds and two and a half minutes. Slice reads the whole episode, picks moments that stand on their own, and grows or trims each one by whole sentences to fit. A clip you mark yourself from the transcript can run from 3 seconds to 10 minutes.
