How to make a seamless Instagram carousel
A seamless carousel is one wide image split into panels so the picture carries on from slide to slide. The splitter does the cutting. These decide whether the seams hold up once it is posted.
Do this
- Use the 4:5 carousel size, 1080 × 1350, for portrait posts. It takes the most screen in the feed.
- Use 1080 × 1080 if the rest of your grid is square, and keep every panel in one carousel the same size.
- Split from a wide original, at least a few thousand pixels across, so each panel stays sharp.
- Put faces, headlines and logos in the middle of a panel, never across a seam.
- Post the panels in file order, carousel-1 first, and check the swipe before you publish.
Where seams break
- Mixing sizes in one post. Instagram crops every slide to the first one and the picture jumps.
- Splitting by adding up panel widths. Rounding drifts a pixel or two by the fifth slide.
- Adding a border or a bleed. Anything at the edge shows twice where two panels meet.
- Text that straddles a seam. Instagram leaves a small gap between slides and the word splits.
- Re-saving panels in another app before posting. Each save can re-crop or re-scale them.
Questions
What is a seamless carousel?
One wide picture split into several panels that sit side by side in a carousel. When someone swipes, the picture continues from one slide to the next as if it were a single panorama. It only works if every slide is cut at exactly the right pixel, which is what this carousel maker does.
What size does Instagram use?
The 4:5 carousel size is 1080 by 1350 for portrait posts, and it is the default here. Square posts are 1080 by 1080. Every slide in one carousel has to be the same size, so pick the ratio first and the tool keeps all the panels matching.
How many panels can I make?
Between two and ten, which is the most Instagram allows in one carousel. The tool suggests a number based on how wide your picture is, and you can change it. If you pick more panels than the picture covers, the empty part is filled with a blurred copy or a solid colour, your choice.
Why do the seams line up here when other tools leave a gap or a jump?
Each panel is cut from the same placement of the original picture using its own position, not by adding up the widths of the panels before it. Adding up widths lets tiny rounding errors build, so by the fifth slide the picture has drifted a pixel or two. Here the fifth slide is computed the same way as the first.
Is my picture uploaded anywhere?
No. The picture stays in your browser. The panels are cut and zipped on your own device and nothing is sent to us.
Does it work for TikTok photo mode?
Yes. Choose the 9:16 option and you get 1080 by 1920 slides, which is what TikTok shows full screen in photo mode. The swipe works the same way as on Instagram.
