What Kids & Family covers actually do

Flat illustration, primary colour, rounded type, a character at the centre. Greeking Out, Wow in the World, Brains On, Story Pirates and The Zoo-Quarium all follow it. The convention is strong enough that a photographic cover in this chart looks like it belongs to a different app.

At 55 pixels

The names are the problem. Kids & Family averages 33 characters, and 54 of the US top 100 run past 25. A drawn character still reads small. "Greeking Out from National Geographic Kids" does not, and the part that survives is whichever three words are set largest.
